Tasks from Today: Mon 25th Feb

In today's lesson you were set one research task based on the film Atonement that you watched over half term. You had 45 minutes to complete the research.

Whether you were in the lesson or not, the work needs to be completed. These are the research questions:

Research Tasks

Research the following questions and answer them fully in your class work book:

1.       Who directed Atonement? What other projects has the director been involved in and what does this say about his reputation and key specialist areas? Who wrote the novel that Atonement is based on, what do you know about him?

2.       What was the name of the Production Company and Theatrical Distributor? How would you describe the Distribution company? What pattern does this reflect relating to British Films over the last 20 years? Name 20 well known films made by the same two Production and Distribution companies.

3.       Identify key iconography and genre conventions. Where and how are they used in the film?

4.       How well did Atonement fare at the Box Office? What critical success/awards did the film receive, including its actors?

5.       How does Atonement culturally represent the image of Britain (answer in depth, referring to theory and using media language)

6.       What ‘type’ of British film is Atonement, with evidence and reference to the film?

7.       In no more than 50 words, summarise the narrative for an academic film magazine like the BFI’s ‘Sight and Sound’.

8.       Briefly discuss use of Form and Style of Atonement (how the Director uses Technical and Symbolic codes).

9.       What do think the audience appeals of Atonement are?

It is up to you to complete the Reflective Analysis draft at home in your own time not in lesson time.

Reminder: If you have storyboards or reflective analysis drafts for me to look at then please either email them or print and hand them to me.

FOR THURSDAY'S LESSON (28th Feb) YOU MUST HAVE ALL HALF TERM HOMEWORK COMPLETED (INCLUDING WATCHING BOTH FILMS) AND ALL OF THE ABOVE ATONEMENT RESEARCH QUESTIONS COMPLETED.

See earlier post for deadlines for coursework submission.

85th Academy Awards

The 85th Academy Awards will take place on Sunday 24 February, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. The awards ceremony begins at 1.30amGMT.

There are, as ever, several big names in contention for a prestigious Oscar, but the biggest among them are two films with strongly patriotic/military themes - Ben Affleck's Argo and Steven Spielberg's Lincoln. Also in contention is Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty, a re-telling of the US hunt for Osama Bin Laden and, on a lighter note, the romantic comedy Silver Linings Playbook. If Daniel Day-Lewis picks up the Best Actor Oscar for his performance in Lincoln, he will become the first actor in cinema history to win the coveted award three times.

Where to Watch The Oscars Live
Sky Movies will air the red carpet arrivals live from 11.30pm GMT, on Sky Movies Oscars (and HD) and Sky Living (and HD). The actual awards ceremony will air on Sky Movies Oscars (and HD) from 1.30am GMT to 4am GMT.

The event will also be broadcast online on Livestream.com.

Keep in touch with all the news and the awards via the official Oscars app, available for mobile devices running iOS or Android. The app is also available on Amazon.
