This
Week...
It's
a monthly occurrence but if you thought the excitement of taking delivery of a
new issue of Empire has worn off, you'd be oh-so-wrong. Like Tony Stark arriving
at the Stark Expo, there are have been fireworks, dancing and AC/DC at high(ish)
volume to celebrate a bumper edition filled with astonishing exclusives,
incisive reviews and flawless punctuation. Vying for ascendency on the cover are Henry Cavill's Man Of
Steel and General Zod himself, Michael Shannon, while inside is the Supes scoop
on Zack Snyder's reimagining of The Big Blue Boy Scout, as well as
access-all-areas coverage of the Jameson Empire awards, plenty on The Great
Gatsby and a whole lot more. Online, meanwhile, our huge celebration of movie music has kicked on with lovely
contributions from Danny Boyle, J.J. Abrams and Up's Lee Unkrick. Oh, and a
little movie called Iron Man 3 came out...

Thor: The Dark World Teaser Online This time, Chris
Hemsworth's Thor is back on Earth to defend us all against the deadly forces of
Malkeith (Christopher Eccleston), leader of the Dark Elves of Svartalfheim.
Well, at the very least he's here to pick up Natalie Portman and get her out of
harm's way, which we suppose is close enough. And it looks from this like he's
going to need help from his disgraced brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston). Hooray! Er.
We mean, boo hiss. Let's hope he gets hold of his horned helmet and/or some hair
conditioner soon. |

Screen To Stage: Once The movie Once is a musical so subtle
that most people don't even realise it is a musical in the first place. The
indie feel, low-key guitar songs and musician characters mean that it's easy to
miss the way characters unfailingly sing their feelings, or the miraculous
ability they all have to pick up one another's songs (which, let's face it,
talented musicians can actually do to a greater or lesser extent, so it only
seems miraculous to the rest of us). All of that makes it a non-obvious choice
for a stage adaptation - but the further non-obvious choices made in staging
that adaptation make this a show that's as delightfully low-key as the film was.
Despite the fact that this is a Broadway smash transferred to the West End, it
could hardly be further from the Lloyd Webber / Cameron Mackintosh extravaganza
we're accustomed to seeing. |

The Empire Podcast #58 Don Cheadle threatens to vaporise a
member of the Empire Podcast team this week, while Steve Coogan does a
pitch-perfect Roger Moore impersonation, just because he can. Sample discussion
question: who has the best chin in cinema? Sample news story: Zach Braff is on
the Kickstarter gravy train. Sample reviews: Iron Man 3, The Look Of Love and
Bernie - and in a special teaser insert, a spoiler-free preview of our thoughts
on Star Trek Into Darkness. |

Zach Braff On His Wish I Was Here Kickstarter
Project Following in the footsteps of the immensely successful
crowd-sourced Kickstarter campaign that was (and will be) the Veronica Mars movie, Zach Braff is looking to pull off a
similar trick with his long-awaited follow-up to Garden State, Wish I Was Here.
You can find out more about it in this news story - which includes a link to where you can
contribute yourself - but for details about how @ZachBraff is harnessing this new way to make movies, have a
look at our exclusive interview with him below... |

Thor: The Dark World Teaser Trailer Breakdown Thor has
returned! After teaming up with Earth's Mightiest Heroes last year, Thor is back
this November in another solo outing that sees him facing an enemy that
threatens all nine of the Nine Realms - Earth included. The very first teaser
trailer just took its bow online, so our Dan Jolin - the office's resident Dark
World expert - cast his eye over the result to see what he could glean from
these glimpses of footage... |

8 Things To Look Out For At Sundance London It's not every
week that the great Robert Redford ventures down to SE10 - unless he's got a
thing for the National Maritime Museum we don't know about - but since expanding
the Sundance Film Festival to Britain he's established an annual indie haven
8000 miles east of its American home. You couldn't squeeze more high-calibre
independent cinema into this historic corner of London if Todd Solondz set one
of his misanthropic masterpieces aboard the Cutty Sark. So where to start
between April 25 and 28? And, more important, what to see? Here's Empire's guide
to the likely highlights. |

Christopher McQuarrie Career Interview Christopher
McQuarrie is the Oscar-winning screenwriter behind The Usual Suspects. He's also
directed The Way Of The Gun, Valkyrie and, most recently, Jack Reacher. In this
extensive Empire interview, he talks about the trials and tribulations involved
with working in Hollywood, Tom Cruise and just how that X-Men script first came

Jack Black On Bernie Usually Jack Black turns up in wild
comedies or voicing animated characters these days, but his latest film, Bernie,
sees the star playing a gospel-singing mortician who strikes up an unlikely
friendship with the town's meanest widow (Shirley MacLaine) - only for their
relationship to come to a sticky and unlikely end. We spoke to the star about
playing a real-life figure and trimming Shirley MacLaine's toenails...

Don Cheadle is a

Zach Braff is
perfectly aware of the subjunctive mood, but is willing to forgo using it for
the sake of a catchy title. |
