Half Term Homework

Hello all,

A reminder of the half term homework tasks you were set in class on Friday 23rd October by Mrs Griffiths.

Due Monday 2nd November - Micro Analysis

Complete the first draft of your micro analysis. Those of you who gave me clips to watch for the deadline will have received your title before we broke up for half term - I will re-send these to you via email.

For Monday's lesson on the 2nd November, please ensure you bring in your film clip so that you can work on the analysis in class.



Due Monday 9th November - The Pitch

For the second piece of coursework this year you will create your own film product and this will either be a storyboard or a short film. You will need to sell your film idea to both Mrs Griffiths and the rest of the class.

To ensure you have thought through many of the important components of the piece of coursework before we begin, you will need to complete a pitch. The PPT below (which has also been emailed to you) walks you through the SEVEN slides you will need to have completed for your pitch.

Face/Off [Woo, 1996] Micro Analysis

Explore how meaning is created for the spectator through use of cinematography, sound and performance in the opening sequence of Jon Woo's Face/Off [1996].

To support your analysis, I have taken screen shots from the opening sequence and uploaded them here:

Please type up this analysis and double space the lines. Your analysis should be no longer than 1500 words.

This analysis is due on Monday 19th October. 

FM1: Choosing a Film Clip for Analysis

Identify up to three clips from different films that are 3-5 minutes in length. Your chosen clips should serve a purpose in the film: you, as the spectator must learn something from them about characters, plot development or similar.

These clips must be given to Mrs Griffiths to check them - either as a DVD or in digital format - with the clip timings clearly identified.

For example, when watching the clip from Casino Royale [Campbell, 2006] you will notice that the director established the genre of the film, the key character(s) and some events central to plot development. Key micro features are performance, editing, mise-en-scene, cinematography and sound.

In the opening to Face/Off  [Woo, 1996] the director establishes a key plot point that will drive the rest of the story forward and provides motivation for the actions of central characters. It also identifies the genre and the central characters. Key micro features are sound, editing, performance and cinematography.

Choose a sequence that:

• Serves a purpose in the film as a whole
• Clearly helps the spectator to understand something important from the sequence
• Uses clear examples of micro features to establish understanding
• Is 3-5 minutes in length
• You enjoy!

Focus on Sound

Task One:

Make detailed notes in your book about the PPT below. There are a number of key sound terms you will need to know in order to write in both your coursework and your exam work.

Task Two:

Watch the below clip from an episode of Doctor Who Confidential. The focus is on sound and foley artists. Make notes in your book.

Task Three:
Watch the below clip from the opening of the film Face/Off [Woo, 1996]. Respond to the following title: Explore how sound creates meaning for the spectator in the opening sequence of the film. Write in detail and using key sound terminology.

FM1 Reading - Performance and Movement

Read and make detailed notes on pages 24-30 of the AS Film Studies textbook. Your focus is on Mise en Scene: Performance and Movement.

In addition, you need to complete the three blue box activities on pages 27 and 28.

Below is the Bridging Work for students hoping to enrol on the AS Film Studies course in September. We have been thrilled with the enthusiasm for the subject shown by students so far and are really looking forward to seeing your presentations and short films.
